Paris Gare de Lyon gets a facelift
By 2020, Gare de Lyon Station in Paris will see another 10 million passengers passing through every year. Time for a facelift !
Imagine a massive glass frontage that opens onto Place Henri Frenay - an expanse of glass that will form a worthy partner to the historic façade in Place Louis Armand.
This new wing of the building, with its echoes of classic 19th century railway architecture, will provide 4,000 sq m of space for passengers, shops and services, in the heart of the city. Fifty retail units will offer everything from restaurants and cafés to pharmacies and bookshops - and there will be four times more space to relax in.
The new glass canopy will extend the "yellow" platform area and will create space for more extensive waiting areas, with small business lounges featuring power sockets and constantly-updated passenger information screens.
There will be new routes for easier access into the Mediterranean Hall.
The glass frontage will also enclose the whole "yellow" platform area, and cut out noise pollution to the neighbourhood.
Solar panels on the roof will also provide power to the station.
Rainwater will be collected in order to water plants, wash the floor and reduce waste.
With more space, new shopping facilities, better passenger information and environmentally-friendly features, all of Gares & Connexions key requirements are incorporated in the Gare de Lyon project!
